My last post was in April. It's been a while since I posted and for no good reason. I'll post a few bit of pictures in the next couple of days of our big trip to Colorado over the summer.
Here was our camping trip to Payson, Arizona this past weekend. Payson is amazing because it is only 90 miles from our house yet a completely different climate. A little over an hour drive and we were up in the ponderosa pine trees and 30 degrees cooler. The town of Payson is at exactly 5,000 ft so about 3,800 feet above Phoenix. The Mogollon Rim is just past Payson and gives amazing views while on top of the Colorado Plateau. We camped in the shadows of the rim over night and planned to hike to a natural spring the next day.
Jessica woke up with a headache so we took a drive up on the rim instead of going for a hike. It worked out well due to the trail being closed to work on the decommissioning of a nearby hydro-electric facility. The drive we made was 42 miles of mostly smooth off-roading. It was very scenic and switched between tight twist in the middle of dense pine forest, open grass meadows and sharp rock cliffs with 2,000 ft drops. We'll definitely be spending more time in this area in the future.
On the way back to Phoenix, we took a detour to the Tonto Basin which features Roosevelt Lake. We crossed the bridge, took a few pictures of the Roosevelt Damn and then drove up the Apache Trail; another 40 miles of off-road driving featuring rough desert terrain. There were sections on the trail that were only one vehicle wide with a steep cliff off to one side featuring a many hundred foot drop. Other areas of the trail were flat, wide and smooth allowing us to drive at 50 mph on sand. We did nearly 100 miles off-road, totaling more than paved driving.
